Announcing Earth Day Speakers Program — April 21

For the first time the Environmental Committee will hold a speaker’s program in the Blue Heron Pavilion and all are invited.

11:00 When Quiet Waters was a Farm. Karen Mitchell, Nita Dulaney Treffer and Chris Buser grew up in three different families who, from the 1930s on, cared for the farm that became Quiet Waters Park. Learn about farm operations, animals, buildings, crops and working for the wealthy Bishops who summered there. There will be plenty of time for questions about the farm, kids’ chores, and all the FUN.

12:00 Invasive Vines & What to Do. Nina Fisher and Ginger Woolridge of Save Our Trees will provide a slideshow on the harm caused by local invasive vines. They will talk about control methods for our yards and communities and answer your questions about native alternatives to invasive plants.

1:00 Quiet Waters Park’s Deciduous Forest. Jim Collatz, an Ecosystem Ecologist retired from NASA, will talk about the forests of Quiet Waters Park and how they are representative of the Eastern Deciduous Forest of North America. He’ll show pictures of how the forest has changed over time and can answer your questions about the park’s birds.

And stop by the Friends of Quiet Waters Park table between 10:00 and 2:00 located in the formal garden.  The Friend’s will be giving away a variety of guides on native plants for you gardeners. Of special interest to families, we will have many free gently used books on nature, wildlife, science, birding guides as well as storybooks. Also, one of the Park Rangers designed a “Nature Detective” game for children to use in exploring the park (and it includes stickers!). Last year’s very popular “fur bearers trunk” with pelts and skulls from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources will be back to intrigue the curious.
